Here from the UK as one of the many guest performers at The International Street Theatre, this just one of really great reasons for visiting the beautiful riverside town of Holzminden with its cobbled streets and idyllic countryside setting. Don’t miss the delights of delightful town complete with glockenspiel, hidden antique shops, friendly and chatty townsfolk. Our hosts have thoughtfully accommodated us in the three star superior (better than many four star hotels) Weserhotel Schwager, bordered by a moat the hotel sits on the bank of the river Weser and a stones throw from the cafe society and restaurants of Holzminden’s alstadt. On arrival at the Weserhotel you are immediately reassured by the hotels front elevation and staircase up to a bright and uncluttered reception area, where I was immediately greeted by a gentleman in a welcoming way that is always a plus after a long journey. First impressions are the most important and this was first class. The hotel rooms are large, immaculately clean (as is the whole hotel and restaurant) with desk, adequate wardrobe space, safe deposit boxes, luggage table, wall mounted TV and of course most importantly comfortable beds, fluffy pillows and linen to match. My room 106 overlooks the moat to the rear of the hotel with a a view of the moat, ducks and tree lined country walks. The restaurant is modern, 50% glass fronted and tastefully furnished and has centrally fitted open fire 🔥 (ok it’s gas fired but real flames add to the atmosphere ). A well equipped bar with a wide choice of beers bottled or on tap (3 or 4), a selection of wines, when I asked for red wine I was offered a choice of at least three by the glass (all good and reasonably priced). Of course a huge selection of other drinks both soft and alcoholic. Breakfast was a choice of both continental and cooked breakfast, plenty of choice cereals, cheeses, cold meats, yogurts, breads and spreads etc. Lunch and evening meals were buffet style and were more than adequate and tailored to match the varied requirements of the festival performers and the budget of the festival organisers. We were well fed and had no need of the ‘al carte’ options but I have no doubt these would be very good. Most importantly to me on any hotel visit is the staff, and I have to say they are and were five star. The restaurant staff super efficient, smiling and engaging at service, genuinely friendly without overstepping professional boundaries. House staff servicing the rooms etc did so quietly, efficiently and always had a smile and passed the time of day. Any hospitality establishment is only as good as its staff, the Weserhotel Schwager has excellent staff and they are a credi to what also must be acknowledged good management. Look after your staff, they will then look after your guests as the have done for during our visit. A plus for me was the addition of a discreet but comfortable smoking room with cigarette dispensing machine. A real bonus for me as I lost my tabacco on a rainy Sunday and would have to walk a mile to replenish. The photo of the defunct cigarette street machine I discovered the day before I discovered the smoking room and thought a rarity hence I photographed it as a throw back to bygone times 😂. The It’s only been possible to write this review as a result of our company being invited to take part in Holzminden International Street Theatre Festival 2025, we are eternally grateful for the organisers inviting us, it has been wonderful. Huge thanks to all those that make the festival a reality, it’s a massive amount of work, responsibility, expense, headaches and worries to make it all come together. Organisers, support services and volunteers number in the hundreds have made it a huge success in 2025. Long may the festival continue. If you are thinking of visiting Holzminden, do so you won’t be disappointed at anytime of the year, if you visit during the International Street Festival you are in for a real treat! Book early the Festival gains momentum each year and you don’t want to miss out! 🤓😎😎😎
